I’ve been having this dream
all i see are starving children
they’re looking for anyone to help them.
By the look on their faces, a meal is not that’s causing the starvation.
They need love, compassion, or even just someone who is willing to give them a hug.
…………………………………..
I wake up
put on my clothes
and walk the bus stop.
A man in need ask me for some spare change
but I give him the classic American lie
“Sorry I’m All Out.”
when clearly I have spare change because I’m going to do my laundry.
…………………………………..
Laundry is soaking and washing
when I see a commercial on television.
It’s a famous actor asking if I can spare 10 cents for a child’s food and education.
Though the commercial is sad
I never do anything
It almost seems like I’m more prone to drink a highly expensive caffeinated drink
during those moments in time.
The funny thing is that when I ask for the total for a caffeine supplement
I never flinch at the fact that I’m paying 5 dollars for enhanced water.
…………………………………….
My selfishness is anything but impeccable.
If I cared for anyone beside myself for a few minutes.
I could save a child, a family, a husband, a wife, a baby that is in need.
The more I think about this dream
it makes me wonder why I worry about getting the highest gigabyte iPod.
These are all things we as Americans stay up tossing and turning all night about
When there are people who don’t have things we even think twice about.
When was the last time you were worried you would die from having not eaten in days?
These are all things we never think about and something must be done.
……………………………………….
So, I ask you
WHY?
Why do you and I live our lives caring about the pointless things we call “needs”?
Why don’t we save someone in need?
………………………………………..
It doesn’t take much to be helpful
but someone must be saved for you to be a hero.
